Compost Collective
Weβre on a mission to revolutionise waste management by making composting the heart of it, turning food waste into eco-gold. We see a future where empty, neglected spaces transform into thriving gardens, buzzing with community life.
Our Purpose
Vision
Our vision is to create a network of composting communities that work together to reduce waste, improve soil health, and foster a sense of environmental stewardship while contributing to individual well-being and fostering meaningful connections.
Mission
Our mission is to make composting an accessible and engaging activity that promotes environmental sustainability and wellbeing. We believe in the power of community-driven change and seek to collaborate with circular businesses like The Loop to amplify our impact.
About Compost Collective
We first met at the UAL Creative Hackathon in February 2024, where our shared passion for sustainability sparked a journey that hasnβt stopped since. As a BAME women-led team, we are driven by lived experiences, creativity, and a deep belief that communities hold the power to create change.
For us, it all starts with education. By working with schools, we empower the next generation to see soil, food, and waste not as problems, but as opportunities for regeneration. From there, we collaborate with businesses and local communities to create on-site composting solutions that close the loop between food waste and food growth.
Our work has already been recognised: we were proud to be named one of UALβs Future 50 Businesses of 2024.
We imagine a time when empty, neglected spaces are reborn as lush gardens, alive with the hum of community activity. Places where food is grown, ideas are shared, and connections - human and more-than-humanβare nurtured.
This is personal for us. Composting isnβt just about waste, itβs about care, creativity, and resilience.
Why?
We are running out of soil.
In the UK alone, over 50% of our topsoil is already degraded. Globally, industrial farming and poor waste practices have stripped the earth of its lifeβleaving behind dirt that can't grow food.
Food is losing its nutritional power.
Vegetables grown today contain significantly fewer nutrients than they did 50 years ago. Without healthy soil, food becomes hollowβless flavour, less nourishment, less life.
We throw away what could save us.
In the UK, we waste around 9.5 million tonnes of food every year, much of which ends up in landfills, releasing methane instead of being returned to the earth.
If we canβt grow food, how will we feed our communities?
And not just human communitiesβpollinators, birds, fungi, and microbes all rely on thriving green spaces to survive. Soil connects us all.
Food Waste Management
We start by installing local,
community-based composting
stations. Our team guides the
community through the
composting process and offers
insights on proper waste
segregation. Regular checks from
our team ensure the compost
stations operate smoothly.
Green Space Regeneration
We utilise locally produced compost to grow food and transform dead or underutilised spaces into green spaces for the community to enjoy. Whether itβs community gardens or office building terraces, no area is too expansive or limited to be regenerated into a relaxing green retreat.
Community Engagement
The green spaces are perfect for hosting events, workshops, and
local markets, creating opportunities for community engagement and connections. We provide educational workshops and events for community members, as well as specialised sessions for local schools and colleges focusing on soil health and composting.
